About Dr. Biswas

DR ArpitaBiswas

Dr. Arpita Biswas is a registered psychologist with almost twenty five years of practical clinical experience. Her qualifications include a Master’s, an M.Phil and a Ph.D. degree in psychology. She helps her clients in dealing with a wide range of emotional and mental health issues. She offers psychological assessment, individual therapy, family therapy, and group therapy to adults and older adolescents (above age 16). She also offers psychological assessment, counseling and therapy services to children and younger teens (under supervised practice).

Dr. Biswas practices evidence-based psychotherapies which are guided by the most current research relevant to the practice of clinical psychology. She is extensively trained in an array of psychotherapeutic approaches including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Psychodynamic therapy, Clinical Hypnosis, EMDR, and Mindfulness Interventions. She has a number of published research articles in scientific journals in the area of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. She tailors her therapeutic approaches according to the needs of the clients. She utilizes her extensive clinical experience and insight, and works collaboratively with the client, to determine which approaches would be most helpful for the client. In conducting psychotherapy, she remains sensitive to the cultural and social background of the client. Dr. Biswas employs tools such as homework and practices to be completed in between the sessions which serve to re-enforce the skills learned during sessions. She often incorporates mindfulness meditation practices to help her clients obtain a deeper sense of acceptance, meaning and tranquility.

Dr. Biswas also conducts psychological and psychovocational assessments for motor vehicle accidents (MVA), Workman’s Compensation and Insurance Board (WSIB), immigration, and for other medical insurance cases. For these assessments, she accepts referrals directly from clients, lawyers, occupational therapists, disability case managers or from insurance companies to assess psychological functioning and to determine the nature and extent of the disability, provide diagnosis, prognosis, and to provide a suggested treatment plan.

Before starting her full time private practice in 2008, Dr. Biswas worked for several years as a staff psychologist at the Health and Wellness Department of the University of Toronto, Scarborough. Currently she is associated as a Faculty with The Centre for Mindfulness Studies, Toronto and co-teaches a Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy Program. In her practice, she continues to teach and supervise other psychotherapists and psychologists under supervised practice. In her spare time, Dr. Biswas enjoys spending time with family and friends, loves travelling and engages in meditation for self-exploration and development.
